Extracurricular Programs at AMS


Activity: Band

Grade Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th 

Sponsor: Mrs. Kathy Baker and Mrs. Karen Diekmann; Band hall; kbaker@starkville.k12.ms.us 

Activity Fee: Varies    

Description of Activity: There are tryouts in spring of 5th grade. There are forms that are given to the participating students in spring of 5th grade year. This class meets 1 period a day, daily in the band hall. Once the students get into high school, if they continue with band, they will travel with the SHS band. You must be in 6th grade to start band.


Activity: Cheer (AMS & JV)

Grade Level: 7th, 8th, and 9th

Activity Fee: $600

Description of Activity: There are tryouts in March/April in the AMS Gym. You must have an application packet, physical, and a parent permission form to participate. They practice three times a week with games on Thursdays and also meet to practice for competition. Tumbling experience is preferred. You must have 75% average in all subjects. They travel to every football game. The school website has additional information about cheer. 


Activity: AMS Girls’ Basketball

Grade Level: 7th and 8th

Activity Fee: None

Description of Activity: There are tryouts in May to demonstrate appropriate skills. You must have a physical and a parent permission form, and you can get these in the front office. This will conflict with soccer. You will travel to away games. 


Activity: Boys Golf

Grade Level: 6th-12th

Activity Fee: $75

Description of Activity: There are tryouts in February.  They have to have a physical and a parent permission form, and you can get these in the front office. This will conflict baseball. You will travel to away tournaments. 


Activity: Math Counts

Grade Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

Sponsor: Nathan King; room 222-E building; nking@starkville.k12.ms.us

Activity Fee: $10

Description of Activity: All are accepted up front, but you have to take a test. You can get the necessary forms from Mr. Jordan (A building). They meet once a week on Thursdays after school. You must have an A or B average in math. Travel to Jackson and other surrounding areas, once or twice. Additional information can be found on AMS8.weebly.com.


Activity: A.F.C. (All for Christ) 

Grade Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th 

Sponsor: Nathan King; room 222-E building; nking@starkville.k12.ms.us

Activity Fee: none (will accept donations for needy)

Description of Activity:  Community leaders around the area speak to students about their Christian faith. They will meet once a week on Wednesday morning from 7:50-8:10 in room 222-E.


Activity: Select chorus 

Grade Level: 7th, 8th

Activity Fee: $20

Description of Activity: The students meet every day to learn sight reading and repertoire that they will perform at various locations/events. Some singing experience is preferred.  Travel at least once for state contest.  Tryouts are held at AMS room 128 E at the end of each year.


Activity: Volleyball 

Grade Level: 7th, 8th 

Sponsor: Miari Franklin; Gym; mifranklin@starkville.k12.ms.us

Activity Fee: $200.

Description of Activity: Teaching young girls the fundamentals of volleyball. Tryouts are held in April at AMS gym. Meets summer and fall after school four to five times each week for practice.  It will conflict with all other fall sports.  Students must maintain a C average in all classes.  The team will travel to other area middle schools to compete.  


Activity: 7th grade football

Grade Level: 7th

Activity Fee: none

Description of Activity:  There are no tryouts. Practice is during seventh period and also after school.  Students must maintain passing grades and good conduct.  The team will travel to away games.  Students must turn in a physical and parent permission form, which can be found in the front office.


Activity: National History Day 

Grade Level: 6th -12th grade

Activity Fee: only for competition 

Description of Activity: A national history competition. That stresses history and historical research and writing. There are no tryouts. Students will meet in the library once or twice each week. It will conflict with sports. Students must maintain a C average or above. Students will travel to state and national competitions.  


Activity: Science Fair 

Grade Level: 6th, 7th, & 8th 

Sponsor: Ms. Jeanine Lark; B5; jlark@starkville.k12.ms.us

Activity Fee: It depends on students projects.

Description of Activity: I mentor students in their endeavor to enter the region V science fair competition.I also chaperone them to state competitions. There are no tryouts. There are forms to be completed each year. These will be provided at an interest meeting in early fall. There is travel to regional competition and also to state competition for those who qualify at regional competition.  


Activity: Spelling Bee 

Grade Level:  6th, 7th, & 8th

Description of Activity: Students volunteer to study the current list of words to compete on the school district levels. Only if students advance will travel be involved.


Activity: Reading Fair

Grade Level:  6th, 7th, & 8th

Activity Fee: None

Description of Activity:  Students will create a story board display to for potential competition. Only if students advance will travel be involved.


Activity: Poetry Night 

Grade Level: 6th, 7th, & 8th

Description of Activity: Volunteers sign up to read a poem. This event is open to students, parents, faculty, staff, & administrators.


Activity: 8th grade football  

Grade Level:  8th grade

Activity Fee: None

Description of Activity: Varsity 8th grade football competes in the Golden Triangle Conference. Tryouts are held in the spring. Students must turn in completed physical and parent permission forms which can be found in the AMS office. Students must maintain a passing average in all subjects. There are usually at least three away games each year. Games are on Thursdays. Students will meet in the weight room every day.


Activity: Science Club

Grade Level:  8th grade only at this time

Activity Fee: None

Description of Activity: A club of Science enthusiasts, who attend competitions and complete science fair projects. Tutoring of students is also done. Students must have at least an 85 average in science. There are field trips. Students will meet every two weeks after school in room 218E. Necessary forms can be obtained from Ms. Herrington. 


Activity: Student Council 

Grade Level: 6th, 7th, & 8th

Description of Activity: AMS student council represents students at AMS. Representatives will be elected by their peers. 


Activity: Softball

Grade Level:  7th grade & up

Activity Fee: Must buy apparel 

Description of Activity: Softball travels. Experience required. Students must turn in a physical form which can be found in the AMS office. After tryouts, practice is daily from September – April. It does interfere with track.


Activity: Archery 

Grade Level:  7th & 8th

Description of Activity:  Tryouts are held in October. Students must turn in a physical form which can be found in the AMS office. Practice is three to four days a week beginning in January.  Competition is March – April. There is travel to out of town tournaments.
