GrOW with Your Jacket Family:  Family Cooking Night Shopping List

Gather your family in the kitchen to enjoy a delicious, nutritious meal at home that you prepare together! Join us from your home at www.facebook.com/StarkvilleSD for this live family cooking demonstration lead by Vicki Leach, chef and lecturer with Mississippi State University's Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion.

With a menu of family favorites including crispy baked chicken, strawberry shortcake, and homemade Ranch dressing, we're planning a delicious evening that brings everyone to the table. 

As you prepare to join us from your kitchen, use the shopping list below to purchase your ingredients.  We've also provided a list of kitchen items you'll need to prepare you meal along with recipes.  

 

Shopping List: Basic Ingredients for Recipes

4                                  boneless, skinless chicken breasts

5 cups                         cornflake cereal (to make 2 cups of crushed cornflakes

1 jar (10 ounces)         pre-made basil pesto

3                                  large eggs

1 cup                           buttermilk

1 cup                           mayonnaise

1 quart                        fresh strawberries

2-3 cups                     granulated sugar

1 cup                           heavy whipping cream

2 cups                         all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting countertop)

4 tsp                           baking powder

1/2 tsp                        salt

1/2 cup (1 stick)          butter

1/3 cup                       whole milk

Additional Ingredients needed in various quantities:                      

                                    nutmeg (a dash)

                                    dried thyme leaves (not ground)

                                    dried dill weed (1/4 tsp)

                                    garlic powder (less than a tablespoon)

                                    dried parsley (you’ll need a few tablespoons

                                    cayenne pepper (1/2 tsp max)

                                    salt and pepper (have a small container ready to use - depends on You!)

                                    vegetable oil (about 1/2 a cup)

                                    vegetable cooking spray

 

What You Will Need in the Kitchen to Prepare Your Meal:

side towels and paper towels

small bowls for a little oil, some salt, and some pepper to place at cooking station

sharp knife 

spreading knife/butter knife

cutting board

soap and water/sanitizing solution for cleaning up

 

for Chicken:

zip lock baggies - gallon size 

plastic wrap and a can of veggies or a rolling pin

3 small flat pie pans or 3 small mixing bowls for dipping chicken

baking sheet with aluminum foil 

tongs or forks for turning chicken (and hot pads for handling hot pan)

platter for placing cooked chicken

Oven Baked Chicken with Basil & Cornflakes

 

for Strawberry Shortcake:

3 medium mixing bowls

measuring cups (dry and liquid)

measuring spoons

whisk or hand mixer with whip attachment

2 forks or a pastry blender

biscuit cutter (about 2 inches)

baking sheet and aluminum foil

platter for finished shortcakes

for Ranch Dressing:

measuring cup and measuring spoons

small whisk

medium mixing bowl

container for finished dressing
