50 Years & Counting: Coaching for Excellence

Tommy Tomlinson, Class of 1971

Every day, we see the impact athletic coaches have on the Yellow Jacket student experience. In 1970, as Starkville High School and Henderson High School prepared to fully integrate, coaches took on the task of setting the tone for a smooth first year by helping students focus on achieving excellence in the athletic arena. The competition between student athletes was stiff, and not without conflict, as coaches sought to build strong teams from two student bodies. Their legacy of coaching for excellence continued the winning tradition that still exemplifies Jacket Athletics today.

Tommy Tomlinson is a member of the Class of 1971, and won a position as pitcher on the Starkville High School baseball team. He sat down with us to reminisce, talk about the significance of that historic year, and share how the approach of coaches like Jim Craig, Ray Self and Jim Davis helped to make the transition successful. Watch to hear some of his story, and join us on October 22 as we premiere a compilation of oral history from the SHS Class of 1971.
