New Signage Honors Legendary Starkville High School Baseball Coach Danny Carlisle

For more than a decade, Jimmy and Patti Abraham spent many afternoons, evenings, and weekends at Starkville High School, watching their three sons, Jim, Josh, and Jase, and their teammates compete on the Yellow Jacket diamond under the direction of storied SHS Baseball Coach, Danny Carlisle. In 2023, when their boys’ former teammate Mark Monaghan returned to Starkville to take the helm of Jacket Baseball, they wanted to reconnect with the program as well as honor Coach Carlisle.

This spring, a new lighted sign was installed on the renovated entrance to Yellow Jacket Field at Carlisle Stadium. The Abrahams made a generous donation to fund the signage to honor the memory of their sons' coach and the impact he made on generations of Jacket athletes.

“The Abrahams’ gift is more than a sign—it’s a lasting tribute to a man who helped shape our lives and our program,” said Coach Monaghan. “We all - Jim, Josh, Jase, and I were all inspired by Coach Carlisle's leadership. He meant so much to us and to all his former players, and having his name honored in this way is incredibly special.”

Coach Monaghan and the Abrahams’ oldest son, Jim, were baseball teammates through youth baseball and high school and later coached together after college. Their friendship and the time the Abrahams spent around the Jacket Baseball program over the years became the catalyst for the gift.

Ahead of the 2026 season, Jacket Athletics completed the installation of new field turf and synchronized lighting at Yellow Jacket Field and, along with SHS Baseball Boosters, has upgraded the facility with new paint, picnic tables, and a grilling pavilion – all enhancing the gameday experience for both young and more seasoned fans. With this emphasis on creating great family experiences at the ballpark, a sign for the stadium that pays tribute to Coach Carlisle was next on the list.

“We couldn’t be prouder to have Mark back in Starkville,” Patti said. “When we visited with him, he shared his vision for improving the field. One of the things he mentioned was signage to honor Coach Carlisle, and we knew that was something we wanted to support.”

Over his 28 years as head baseball coach at Starkville High from 1984-2012, Coach Carlisle compiled a 571-252 record and led the program to three state titles, five north half titles, six division titles, and 27 playoff appearances. He was also named Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Coaches four times, but those honors and statistics tell only part of the story of his legacy, the Abrahams say.

“Danny was a man of faith who genuinely cared about his players,” Jimmy said. “Like any coach, he had to make tough decisions about playing time, but he treated every player with fairness and respect. He brought an enthusiastic spirit to the game and had a true passion for what he did. He was not only an outstanding coach, but a wonderful person who taught these young men valuable lessons both on and off the field.”

"Patti and I have great memories of going to the ballpark and watching our sons play,” Jimmy said. “But it wasn’t just about them—it was about all the players and their families. We built relationships that have lasted to this day.”

This new signage at Carlisle Stadium now stands as a fitting tribute to Coach Carlisle and the family atmosphere he worked so hard to build within Yellow Jacket Baseball.
