Starkville High School 10th grader, Joseph Thompson, was selected to participate in the 2026 Honor Band of America at the end of March. The honor came as a result of a rigorous audition process and offered the opportunity to rehearse and perform with nationally acclaimed music educators, conductors and guest artists during the Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis, IN. Thompson's membership in the Honor Band of America makes him one of the top alto saxophone players in the country.

"Joseph is an outstanding young man and a great musician," said Shawn Sullivan, Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District Director of Bands. "It's been a joy to work with him while he's participated in the SOCSD band program, and he is very deserving of this honor"

During his time with the honor band at the Music for All National Festival, Joseph worked with 2026 guest conductor, Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner. Turner is the Dean of the Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Canada and the director of the Wellington Wind Symphony. The festival is one of the largest gatherings of student musicians in the country.

As part of the Honor Band of America, Joseph also had the opportunity to participate in clinics with professional musicians, including Jeff Coffin. Coffin is a Grammy award-winning saxophonist, composer and educator who has played with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and the Dave Matthews Band.

The Honor Band of America was founded in 1992 and has a reputation as one of the nation's finest student concert honor bands. Each year, about 300 students are selected to participate in the program and are considered among the nation's best musicians.

"We are very proud of Joseph for being chosen to participate in this prestigious national honor band," said SOCSD Superintendent Dr. Tony McGee. "A national recognition like this is a testament to the strength of our band program and the music education the district offers. We're excited to see students excel in the performing arts as they are also pursuing a diverse collection of extracurricular and academic opportunities."
