SOCSD EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES

Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District offers an impressive array of extracurricular opportunities at all grade levels designed to tap into student interests, provide exposure to new skills, and engage children in advanced learning experiences in a variety of subject areas.

  • DAILY "SPECIALS": Students in PreK-5th grade participate in Physical Education, Library, Art, Music, Computer Lab and MakerSpace weekly, with a different opportunity incorporated into each school day.
     
  • GIFTED PROGRAMS: The SOCSD academic and artistically gifted programs begin in 2nd grade. All students are tested in 1st grade for acceptance into the program.
     
  • PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES: Students participate in music performance opportunities beginning in kindergarten as part of their regular art and music weekly classes. Henderson Ward Stewart 2nd-4th grade students experience their first auditioned musical during the spring semester.
     
  • STRINGS: Strings instruction begins in 2nd grade. Jacket Strings is a partnership with Mississippi State University which includes shared faculty with the MSU Department of Music.
     
  • PIANO: Through Piano Lab spaces on our 6th-12th grade campuses, students may enroll in Piano classes beginning in 6th grade.
     
  • ROBOTICS: Early introduction to robotics and coding begins in MakerSpace class in kindergarten. Competitive robotics begins in 3rd grade for the gifted program and 6th grade for the general student population.
     
  • GARDENING & WELLNESS: Students in PreK-7th grade experience hands-on growing in our school gardens. Instruction in Agriculture, Life Sciences and Horticulture begins in 6th grade through our GrOW classroom and curriculum which includes beginning agricultural & environmental science, gardening, and mobile cooking units to facilitate a seed-to-table learning experience.
     
  • CLUBS: 
    • SOCSD after-school clubs begin in 2nd grade. Currently book club, art club and science club are available, with opportunities increasing at each school level.
    • Partnership Middle School students participate in "Club Fridays" beginning in 6th grade, offering a variety of options based on student interests. Several of the Club Friday groups are partnerships with Mississippi State University which provides materials, activities and are facilitated by MSU faculty/graduate students. 
    • Student Government opportunities begin in 8th grade.
    • Academic Honors organizations such as Beta Club, National Honor Society, Math Counts and others begin in 6th grade.
    • Upper Elementary and Middle School students can participate in more than 20 extracurricular clubs from science and robotics to engineering and gaming. 
    • Starkville High School students participate in more than 25 clubs and nationally affiliated skills-based, honors, and service organizations.
       
  • SPORTS: Mississippi High School Activities Association offers Elementary Archery beginning in 4th grade. All other MHSAA competitive sports begin in 7th grade. SOCSD offers a total of 19 competitive sports.
     
  • PERFORMING ARTS INSTRUCTION: Formal Theatre, Band and Choir ensemble instruction begins in 6th grade.
     
  • HONOR AUDITIONS: Beginning in 6th grade, Band, Choir and Theatre students have the opportunity to perform for state competitions and audition for acceptance into arts honor organizations.
     
  • THEATRE: SOCSD Theatre programs present two auditioned productions per year beginning in 6th grade.
     
  • COMMUNITY SERVICE: SOCSD requires that each extracurricular student organization include a service component, giving students the opportunity to participate in community volunteerism.
