MSU Early Honors Academy Interest Meeting for Rising SHS Seniors Scheduled for March 23

Starkville High School students with an excellent academic record who want to challenge themselves during their senior year of high school are invited to attend an Early Honors Academy Interest Meeting on March 23 at 6 pm at Griffis Hall Forum Room on the campus of Mississippi State University.

Early Honors Academy, offered through a partnership with MSU’s Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College and the Starkville Oktibbeha School District, providesacademically talented seniors the opportunity to engage in dual credit honors college classes held on campus at Griffis Hall, home to the Shackouls Honors College.

Early Honors Academy Courses

FALL 2022: MSU will offer “Who’s the Monster.” This is a 3-credit hour course, college-level seminar designed to introduce students to fiction that explores today’s world of scientific and technological progress. The literature’s focus on modifying the genome provides rich context for the phenomenon known as CRISPR, a scientific development that enables gene-editing in the name of eugenics. Students will read novels in Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Parkseries and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to compare how society deals with the ethical possibilities of major technological and scientific advances.

SPRING 2023: MSU will offer “Chernobyl: From Here to Eternity.” This course is designed to unpack the biggest environmental impact of the 20thcentury, Chernobyl. Students will read Kate Brown’sManual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future, Adam Higginbotham’s Midnight in Chernobyl, and Svetlana Alexievich’s Voices from Chernobyl. In addition, students will reflect on the films “Chernobyl: The Final Warning” and “My Tomb.” Timely, as the tensions around the world rise and discussion focused on nuclear power and weaponry escalate, this course is guaranteed to demonstrate the interplay between science and power.

Rising high school seniors are invited to apply based on their academic resume. Applicants will be interviewed and selected based on the strength of their composite credentials, including advanced placement coursework, using a rubric created through a collaboration between the Shackouls Honors College and SOCSD.
