CHORAL MUSIC
SOCSD choral ensembles perform locally, regionally and nationally through our award-winning choral music program. With an impressive track record of excellence, choral groups and student performers have earned numerous MHSAA Superior ratings and Sweepstakes awards. In both 2025 and 2026, a record-breaking 61 singers from 6th-12th grade earned invitations to the competitive All-State Honor Choir through a state-wide audition process. The program produces numerous "signees" each year as students earn scholarships to participate in various choirs at the collegiate level. In addition to instruction and rehearsal in the performing arts, students may also participate in a rigorous Advanced Placement Music Theory Course and other dual enrollment opportunities to gain college credit while still in high school.
Elementary students begin to learn the basics of music styles, rhythm, and early aspects of reading music through weekly Music exploratory classes beginning in kindergarten. Music productions are an integral part of many of our school's annual traditions like Veteran's Day or Black History Month. In 2nd grade, students have their first opportunity to participate in an audition process as solo and ensemble parts are chosen for the annual Henderson Ward Stewart Spring Musical. Formal choral instruction begins in 6th grade as students may choose Choir for a 9-week rotation. A year-long Choir elective is available beginning in 7th grade.
Each year, middle school, junior high and varsity Jacket choirs have performed throughout the community for district, service and local events. Choral students in junior high and high school participate in various collegiate honor choirs and training events each year to gain experience. The SHS Singers performs each year with the Mississippi State University and Starkville Community Chorus.
