VIVA PROGRAM FOR ARTISTICALLY GIFTED

Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District takes pride in its artistically gifted program, which is designed for students who meet state guidelines for eligibility in 4th and 5th grades. The Verbal Innovations and Visual Arts or VIVA program is designed to help students develop a comprehensive overview of visual arts, art history, and artists and their styles through experimentation and exploration. Innovative and hands-on project-based learning in the arts allows artistically gifted students to explore a variety of media and encourages higher order thinking skills by the enhancement and development of originality and creativity.

In 5th grade, VIVA incorporates an entrepreneurial component where students develop a business plan to design, create, market and sell art pieces to benefit local charities. Students gain insight into the world of working artists while also learning about community service and vendor relations.
