DRAMATIC & MUSICAL THEATRE
The SOCSD award-winning Dramatic and Musical Theatre program offers students training and on-stage experiences in auditioning, acting, choreography, set building, stage management and script writing. With a foundation that begins in elementary school with opportunities to participate in music and drama performances that include music, dramatic readings, acting roles and dance, the district's formal theater classes begin in 6th grade. In 6th grade, students may choose a 9-week theater rotation as one of their exploratory classes, and Theater becomes a year-long elective class in 7th grade. Both the middle school (7th-8th grade) and high school (9th-12th grade) theatre programs present two productions per year and offer opportunities for students to compete in regional and state competitions in a variety of acting and technical categories. Students participating in theater may also choose to become members of the district's SHS or Junior Thespians, honor organizations affiliated with the International Thespian Society.
